Reconditioned turbo

The Enduro had a restart problem after stopping for 15 minutes at the end of a normal run. I'd go into the shops and come out to restart the car and promptly fill the car park with blue smoke. An injector replacement helped, but it still smoked on occasion. Theory is that the oil seal into the hot side of the turbocharger may be compromised, and this lets a drop or two of oil out into the exhaust turbine area when hot. A restart consequently burns this off very quickly, hence the smoke.

Steve Emanuel from Saab Salvage sent me an old turbo removed from a 16-valve 900 (T16) via Precision Turbochargers in Wetherill Park NSW. John Findanis rebuilt it to literally better than new standard by performing a high-speed balance on the turbine, compressor and shaft assembly. His workmanship is impeccable - and when you receive your turbo back from John it will have the basic work done as well as come with new gaskets, fittings, hoses and bolts throughout. The casings are cleaned (they actually looked chemically cleaned) and look new as well. Beautiful - literally new again!

Next blog will show the replacement.
